Blended Scotch Whisky

Blended Scotch Whisky

ABOUT

The term 'Scotch' refers only to Whisky from Scotland.

The term 'Blended Scotch' has two parts

  • Blended refers to a whisky that is composed of both a Malt Whisky and a Grain Whisky as defined by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) -

“Blended Scotch Whisky” means a blend of one or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies with one or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies.

There is no limit to how many individual whiskies went into the blend nor the quantity of said whiskies.
In theory a 500L Butt could be filled with 499.9L of a single malt and only 100ml of a grain whisky and it will still be classed as a Blended Scotch.

  • The term 'Scotch' refers to whisky that has been been distilled, matured and bottled in Scotland.

A Blended Scotch, can be composed of different whiskies of varying ages, cask types and grain types.

HOWEVER. There are instances where a single Scottish distillery have produced a blended scotch whisky from their own as distilled malt and grain spirits and then blended them.

As the SWA do not have a recognised category for these 'Single Distillery Blends' they have been included in this 'Blended Scotch' category, examples include Loch Lomond and the Borders Distillery.

You can search for them by entering Single Distillery Blend into the search box below.
