The Whisky Database & Non Chill Whisky Filter

In April 2021, I was fortunate enough to have been selected to take part in my first ever Tweet Tasting hosted by Steve Rush @TheWhiskyWire with The Glasgow Distillery, it was Steves 200th Tweet Tasting.

I have been fortunate to have taken part in a few more since and on Wednesday the 4th October I was once again taking part in another Tweet Tasting with the Glasgow Distillery.

My Tasting Notes

Here are my thoughts from the evening:

1st Up was the Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky (link to whisky resource page)

Tweet Tastings Info Card for the Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky

Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish Triple Distilled Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cask:
Initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks for just under 3 years, before being finished in French Cognac puncheon casks for 2½ years. ABV: 52% RRP: £59.00 Bottles: 1,576

Nose:

Fruity with hints of citrus. There is vegetal note which I love, which often suggests a younger whisky, this quickly morphs into orchard fruit with a creamy custard topped with with cinnamon.

The ABV not giving too much away.

A quick inhale gives a sensation of cream soda

Palate:

Medium Sweet, the orchard fruit are there joined by the citrus notes. It is malty with vanilla and plenty of spice from ginger, cinnamon and pepper.

It has a great level of heat from the alcohol which is never too intense.

Finish:

Bitter oak, the vegetal elements return but suggesting a damp forest floor.

2nd Up was The Glasgow 1770 The Original Unpeated Cask Strength - As yet unreleased
Tweet Tastings Info Card for the Glasgow 1770 The Original Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky

The Original Cask Strength Batch 01 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cask:
Initially matured in first fill ex-Bourbon casks for 3 years, then 10 months in virgin American white oak casks.
ABV: 61.3% RRP: £64.00

Original Cask Strength

Nose:

Sherbert Lemon, vegetal once again, vanilla, icing sugar (powdered sugar) which is almost candy floss. The spice appears as cardamon and coriander seed with   fresh cut grass.

As expected for a cask strength above 60%, it has a very nose singeing heat.

Palate:

Lemon vanila cream with white chocolate fondant. Coriander seed and a touch of menthol mint. Spice is brought in with ginger and white pepper.

The palate can almost be summed up as:

Lemon Cream Muffin

Finish:

Toasted oak, vanilla and menthol.

Very easy drinking for a cask strength with water revealing a ginger syrup cake on the nose then malt biscuit with ginger pieces on the palate.

This is a fantastic whisky at cask strength.

3rd was Glasgow 1770 Golden Beer Finish Batch 2 Single Malt Whisky (link to whisky resource page)

Glasgow 1770 Golden Beer Cask Finish Unpeated Batch 02

Golden Beer Cask Finish Unpeated Batch 02 Cask: Intially matured in first fill ex-Bourbon casks for just over 3 years, before being finished in an Innis and Gunn Golden Beer Cask for a year. ABV: 58%

Beer Cask Finish

Nose:

Vegetal but with the additional twist of a hoppy grapefruit note, there is also milk chocolate and vanilla cream. Some sweetness arrives as Golden Syrup and maybe some cinder toffee.

The alcohol is there ready to pounce.

Palate:

Sweet honeyed malt, the fruits arrive as peach, grapefruit & orange zest all suggesting the influence of hops perhaps.

There is a spicy chilli kick with some ginger and Tabasco sauce.

Beer Cask Finish Palate Notes

Finish:

Dark chocolate also chilli chocolate giving a bitter heat with some dry oak.

The Glasgow 1770 The Original Peated Cask Strength - As yet unreleased

Glasgow Original Peated Cask Strength

Peated Cask Strength Batch 01 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cask: Initially matured in virgin American white oak casks for 4 years and 3 months, before being finished in PX Sherry casks for 11 months. ABV: 60.8% RRP: £66.00

Original Peated Cask Strength

Nose:

This has an Amazing nose!

With dark rich fruit underlying an earthy peat and smoke depth.

Some mossy vegetal elements which suggest a damp dunnage, possibly from the PX Casks.

There are notes of orange oil, almond essence, mint & menthol.

It is one fantastic nose.

Palate:

Charred oak, coal dust, some burnt tyres, dark fruit, orange oil & rich fruit cake.

The smoke keeps building adding layers of salt, more charred oak and remnants of a beach BBQ.

The palate is never to overwhelmed by the peat. It has a fantastic balance of casks and peat.

Original Peated Cask Strength

Finish:

A smouldering beach fire with elements of a recent BBQ intertwined with the smoke.

Glasgow 1770 Takaji Cask Finish Peated Single Malt Whisky (link to whisky resource page)

Glasgow Tokaji Cask Finish Card

Tokaji Cask Finish Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cask: Initially matured virgin American white oak casks for 3 years, before being finished in Hungarian Tokaji hogshead casks for 2 years. ABV: 53.4% RRP: £59.00 Bottles: 615

Glasgow Tokaju Cask Finish

Nose:

It begins with a funky note of smoke dried leather bound books, its quite savoury with sensations of salt powder and hot dogs.

The alcohol is providing a singe of the nasal hairs.

Palate:

It is sweet and syrupy, Its an entire meal! starting with smoky hot dogs, umami, salty & definitely savoury. Orange Oil with charred candied peel and charred red onion.

A very unique palate, quite different to anything I have tried before, but its very enjoyable.

Tokaji Cask Finish Palate

Finish:

Charred BBQ Oak with some salty sea spray.

All five whiskies were high strength which positively added to the experience, but the standouts were the two peated whiskies with maybe the Glasgow 1770 The Original Peated Cask Strength with a marginal lead over the Glasgow 1770 Tokaji Cask Finish. Both bottles are now on my to buy list.
